Дієслово або ліцензія на отримання гранту означає надання дозволу. Ліцензія на об'єкт (американське англійська) або ліцензія (британська англійська, індійська англійська, канадська англійська, австралійська англійська, новозеландська англійська, південноафриканська англійська) належить до цього дозволу, а також до документа, який записує це дозволи. Ліцензія може бути надана стороною ("ліцензіаром") іншою стороною ("ліцензіатом") як елемент угоди між цими сторонами. Скорочення визначення ліцензії - "авторизація (ліцензіара) на використання ліцензованого матеріалу (ліцензіатом)". Зокрема, влада може видавати ліцензію, щоб дозволити діяльність, яка в іншому випадку була б заборонена. Це може вимагати сплати комісії та / або підтвердження можливостей.
