Лютеранство є основною галуззю західного християнства, що ототожнюється з теологією Мартіна Лютера, німецького монаха і богослова. Зусилля Лютера з реформування теології та практики Римсько-католицької церкви почали протестантську реформацію на німецькомовних територіях Священної Римської імперії. Починаючи з 95 тез, вперше опублікованих в 1517 р., Роботи Лютера були розповсюджені на міжнародному рівні, поширюючи ранні ідеї Реформації поза впливом та контролем Римсько-католицької курії та імператора Святого Риму. Розкол між лютеранами і римськими католиками був чітким і відкритим з 1521 р. Указу Вормс: укази Сейму засудили Лютеру та офіційно заборонені громадяни Священної Римської імперії захищати чи пропагувати свої ідеї, піддаючи прихильників лютеранства конфіскації всього майна, вказавши половину вилученого майна, відшкодованого імперському уряду, а решту половини - втраченої партії, яка подала обвинувачення. Розкол переважно зосереджений на вченні про обгрунтування.
