Мальтузианство - це школа ідей, яка випливає з політичної та економічної думки преподобного Томаса Роберта Мальтуса, як викладено в його роботах 1798 р. «Оповідання про принцип народонаселення», в якому описується, як безконтрольне зростання населення є експоненціальним, а зростання їжі очікується, що постачання буде арифметичним. Мальтус вважав, що існує два типи "перевірок", які могли б тоді зменшити населення, повернути його на більш стійкий рівень. Він вважає, що існують "попереджувальні перевірки", такі як моральні обмеження, і обмеження шлюбу з особами, що страждають на бідність та / або дефекти. Мальтус вірив у "позитивні перевірки", які ведуть до "передчасної" смерті: хвороби, голоду, війну, внаслідок чого називається мальтузианська катастрофа.
