Меконій - це найраніший стілець новонародженого ссавців. На відміну від пізніх фекалій, меконій складається з матеріалів, що поглинаються під час перебування дитини в матці: кишкові епітеліальні клітини, лануго, слизу, амніотичної рідини, жовчі та води. Меконій, на відміну від пізніх фекалій, є в'язким і липким, як смола, його колір, як правило, дуже темний оливковий зелений; це майже без запаху.
