Модем - це пристрій, який модулює аналоговий сигнал несучої для кодування цифрової інформації та демодулює сигнал для декодування переданої інформації. Мета полягає в тому, щоб створити сигнал, який може бути легко переданий та декодований для відтворення оригінальних цифрових даних. Модеми можуть використовуватися за допомогою будь-яких засобів передачі аналогових сигналів від світлодіодів до радіо. Загальний тип модему - це той, який перетворює цифрові дані комп'ютера на модульований електричний сигнал для передачі по телефонних лініях та демодулюється іншим модемом на стороні приймача для відновлення цифрових даних.
