Код Морзе - це спосіб передачі текстової інформації як серії тональних сигналів, ліхтарів або кліків, які можуть бути безпосередньо зрозумілими кваліфікованим слухачем або спостерігачем без спеціального обладнання. Міжнародний кодекс Морзе кодує основний латинський алфавіт ISO, деякі додаткові латинські літери, арабські цифри та невеликий набір пунктуаційних та процедурних сигналів як стандартизовані послідовності коротких і довгих сигналів, що називаються "точками" та "тире" або "dits" і "dahs". Оскільки багато не англійських природних мов використовують більше 26 римських букв, існують розширення до алфавіту Морзе для цих мов. Кожен персонаж представлений унікальною послідовністю точок і дефісів. Тривалість дефісу тричі дорівнює тривалості крапки. Кожна крапка чи дефіс слідує короткій тиші, яка дорівнює тривалості крапки.
