Мультикультуралізм - це культурне різноманіття громад та політика, яка сприяє такому розмаїттю. Як описовий термін, мультикультуралізм є простим фактом культурної різноманітності та демографічного складу певного місця, іноді на організаційному рівні, наприклад, у школах, бізнесах, кварталах, містах чи націях. Як наказовий термін, мультикультуралізм заохочує ідеологію та політику, яка сприяє такому розмаїттю або його інституціоналізації. У цьому сенсі мультикультуралізм - це суспільство "невимушено багатством гобеленів людського життя та бажання серед людей виражати свою власну ідентичність у спосіб, який вони вважають за потрібне". Мультикультурної ідеології чи політика дуже різняться, починаючи від пропаганди рівної поваги до різних культур у суспільстві, політиці сприяння збереженню культурного різноманіття, політиці, в якій люди різних національних та релігійних груп звертаються до влади, як це визначено групою, до якої вони належать. Дві основні різноманітні та, здавалося б, суперечливі стратегії розвивалися за допомогою різних державних політик та стратегій. Перший зосереджений на взаємодії та спілкуванні між різними культурами.
