У фізиці та інших науках нелінійна система, на відміну від лінійної системи, є системою, яка не задовольняє принципу суперпозиції, тобто вихід нелінійної системи не прямо пропорційний входу. У математиці нелінійна система рівнянь являє собою набір одночасних рівнянь, в яких невідомі з'являються як змінні многочленів ступеня вище одного, або в аргументі функції, яка не є поліномом першого ступеня. Іншими словами, у нелінійній системі рівнянь розв'язок рівняння не може бути записаний як лінійна комбінація невідомих змінних або функцій, що з'являються в ній. Не має значення, чи в рівняннях з'являються нелінійні відомі функції. Зокрема, диференціальне рівняння є лінійним, якщо він є лінійним з точки зору невідомої функції та її похідних, навіть якщо нелінійний з точки зору інших перемінних, що з'являються в ньому. Як правило, поведінка нелінійної системи описується нелінійною системою рівнянь.
