Патріархат є офісом або юрисдикцією патріарха. Патріарх, як термін використовується тут, ▪ ▪ один з найвищих епископів у східному православ'я, раніше, п'ять, які були включені до Пенташорства: Рим, Константинополь, Олександрія, Антіохія та Єрусалим; але зараз дев'ять, за винятком Риму, включаючи патріархів Москви, Сербії, Румунії, Болгарії та Грузії; або ▪ один з десяти високопоставлених єпископів католицизму: сім "патріархів сходу" та патріархи Лісабона, Венеції та Східної Індії; або ▪ один з конкретних патріархів східного православ'я та Церкви Сходу. П'ять патріархів п'ятиборств сів у Римі, Константинополі, Олександрії, Антіохії та Єрусалимі. Східно-західна схизма 1054 р. Розділила латиноамериканську мову Риму від чотирьох греко-говорящих патріархатів, утворюючи окремі римо-католицькі та східні православні церкви. Східний православний патріарх Антіохії переїхав до Дамаску в 13 столітті під час правління єгипетських мамелюків, завойовників Сирії. У Дамаску після апостольських часів процвітала християнська громада.
