Плазмовий рушійний двигун - це тип електричного двигуна, який генерує тягу з квазі нейтральної плазми. Це на відміну від іонних пучкових двигунів, що породжує тягу через витяг іонного струму з джерела плазми, який потім прискорюється до високих швидкостей, використовуючи сітки / аноди. Вони існують у багатьох формах. Плазмові двигуни, як правило, не використовують мережі високої напруги або аноди / катоди для прискорення заряджених частинок у плазмі, а скоріше використовують струми та потенціали, які генеруються внутрішньо в плазмі для прискорення іонів плазми.
