Ефект позиції - це вплив на експресію гена, коли його місце в хромосомі змінюється, часто через транслокацію. Це добре описано в Drosophila по відношенню до кольору очей і відоме як зміна положення ефекту. Фенотип добре характеризується нестабільною експресією гена, що призводить до забарвлення червоних очей. У мутантних мухах очі, як правило, мають розпливчастий вигляд білого та червоного секторів. Ці фенотипи часто обумовлені хромосомною транслокацією таким чином, що ген кольору тепер близький до області гетерохроматину. Гетерохроматин може поширюватися стохастично і вимикати колірний ген, що призводить до секторів білого ока. Ефект позиції також використовується для опису варіації експресії, що виявляється ідентичними трансгенами, які вставляються в різні ділянки генома.
