Положення або припущення - це твердження про те, що претензії аргументів спонукають або обгрунтовують висновок. Іншими словами: приміщення є припущенням, що щось є правдою. У логіці аргумент вимагає набору двох декларативних речень, відомих як приміщення разом з іншим декларативним реченням, відомим як висновок. Ця структура двох приміщень та один висновок формують основну аргументаційну структуру. Більш складні аргументи можуть використовувати ряд правил для з'єднання кількох приміщень з одним висновком або для виведення ряду висновків з оригінальних приміщень, які потім виступають як приміщення для додаткових висновків. Прикладом цього є використання правил висновку, знайденого в символічній логіці. Аристотель вважає, що будь-який логічний аргумент можна звести до двох приміщень і висновку. Приміщення іноді залишаються невизначеними, у цьому випадку їх називають відсутніми приміщеннями, наприклад: Сократ смертний, тому що всі люди смертні.
