Пресвітер у Новому Завіті посилається на лідера місцевих християнських конгрегацій, потім часто не чітко відрізняється від епіскопа, пресвітера, що звертається до звичайних старійшин та єпископа, що звертаються виключно до офісу єпископа. У сучасному застосуванні він, таким чином, відрізняється від єпископа та синонімом священика. Протестантське використання, однак, не розглядається як посилання на члена священства, і такі терміни, як міністр, пастор та старший, використовуються.
Визначення presbyter у англійська словнику
