Профаз, з давньогрецької πρό і φάσις, є стадією мітозу, в якому хроматин конденсується в подвійні стовбурові структури, що називаються хромосомами, в яких хроматин стає видимим. Цей процес, званий конденсацією хроматину, бере участь у конденсаційному комплексі. Оскільки генетичний матеріал реплікується в попередній міжфазі клітинного циклу, в клітині є дві ідентичні копії кожної хромосоми. Ці копії називаються сестринськими хроматидами, і вони приєднуються один до одного в елементі ДНК, присутні на кожній хромосомі, яку називають центромером. Також під час профози може бути застосовано фарбування giemsa для виявлення G-бандажу в хромосомах. Важливим органелем в мітозі є центросома, центр організму мікротрубочок у метазозах. Під час профілактики два центросоми, котрі реплікуються незалежно від мітозу, підвищують активність мікротрубочок у зв'язку з набором γ-тубуліну. Центросоми будуть відштовхуватися до протилежних кінців ядра клітини дією молекулярних двигунів, що діють на мікротрубочки. В основному хроматин в ядрі котується в хромосоми.
