Проталлій або протальоз (від латинського pro = forward і грецького θαλλος (thallos) = twig), як правило, є стадією гаметофіту в житті папороті чи іншого птерідофіту. Іноді цей термін також використовується для опису молодих гаметофітів печінки або торф'яного моху. Проталій розвивається з проростаючих спор. Це короткочасна і непримітна серцеподібна структура, яка, як правило, 2-5 міліметрів завширшки, з низкою ризоїдів (коренеподібні волосся), що росте під ним, а статеві органи: архегоніум (жіночий) та антеріідій (чоловічий). Зовнішній вигляд досить різниться між видами. Деякі з них зелені і проводять фотосинтез, а інші - безбарвні і живлять себе під землею як сапротрофи.
