Псевдонауки - це твердження, віра чи практика, яка представляється як наукова, але не дотримується чинного наукового методу, не має підтверджуючих доказів чи правдоподібності, не може бути надійно перевірений чи іншим не має наукового статусу. Псевдонауки часто характеризуються використанням нечітких, суперечливих, перебільшених чи непідтверджуваних претензій, надмірною залежністю від підтвердження, а не суворими спробами спростування, відсутністю відкритості до оцінки іншими експертами та відсутністю систематичних процесів для раціонального розвитку теорії. Поле, практика чи знання можуть бути обґрунтовано названі псевдонауковими, коли вони представлені у відповідності до норм наукових досліджень, але вони демонстративно не відповідають цим нормам. Наука також відрізняється від одкровення, богослов'я чи духовності, оскільки вона дає уявлення про фізичний світ, отриманий емпіричними дослідженнями та тестуванням. Загальноприйняті вірування в народну науку можуть не відповідати критеріям науки. "Поп-наука" може згладити розрив між наукою та псевдонаукою серед широкої громадськості, а також може включати наукову фантастику.
