Пунічні війни - це серія з трьох воєн, які билися між Римом і Карфагеном з 264 до н.е. до 146 р. До н. Тоді це були, мабуть, найбільші війни, які коли-небудь відбулися. Термін "пунік" походить від латинського слова Punicus, що означає "карфагенський", з посиланням на родовід карнізіанського роду. Основною причиною пунічних воєн стала конфлікт інтересів між існуючою карфагенської імперією та зростаючою римською республікою. Спочатку римляни були зацікавлені в розширенні через Сицилію, частина якого лежала під контролем карфагенів. На початку першої пунічної війни Карфаген був домінуючою силою Західного Середземномор'я з великою морською імперією, тоді як Рим мав стрімко зростаючу владу в Італії, але бракувало військово-морської сили Карфагена. До кінця третьої війни, після більш ніж ста років, і втрати багатьох сотень тисяч солдатів з обох сторін, Рим завоював імперію Карфаген і повністю зруйнував місто, ставши найпотужнішим державою Західного Середземномор'я.
