Пірит мінералу або піррит заліза, також відомий як золото дурня, це сульфід заліза з формулою FeS2. Металевий блиск цього мінералу та блідо-бронзовий лак-жовтий відтінок надають йому поверхневе схоже на золото, отже, відоме прізвисько золота дурня. Колір також призвів до прізвиська "латунь", "Браздлі" та Бразилії, в основному використовується для позначення піріту в вугіллі. Пірит найбільш поширений з сульфідних мінералів. Назва піриту походить від грецького πυρίτης, "від вогню" або "від вогню", у свою чергу від πύρ, "пожежі". У стародавні римські часи це ім'я застосовувалося до кількох видів каменю, які створювали іскри, коли били на сталь; Пліній Старший назвав одну з них ланцюговою, майже напевно, посиланням на те, що ми зараз називаємо пірітом.
