Рафе має кілька різних значень в науці. У ботаніці та планктології вона широко використовується при описі шва або хребта на діатомових кільцях або насіннях. У тваринній анатомії вона використовується для опису рентгенологічного об'єднання безперервної біологічної тканини. Існує декілька різних значущих анатомічних рафів: ▪ Ядро Рафе - кластер середніх розмірів ядра, що знаходиться в стовбурі мозку, який вивільнює серотонін до решти мозку. Вважається, що селективні серотонінові інгібітори зворотного захоплення антидепресантів діють на ці ядра. ▪ Буккальний рафе, що знаходиться на щічці, і свідчення про злиття зубних і нижньощелепних процесів. ▪ Лінгвальна лайка на мові. Очевидним фізичним свідченням лінгвального рафе є френкул або смужка слизової оболонки, яка видна під язиком, прикріпляючи її до підлоги рота. Якщо цей раф занадто жорсткий при народженні, рух язика обмежений, а дитина, як кажуть, "пов'язана язиком". ▪ Піднебінний раф на даху рота. Неповне злиття піднебінного рафа призводить до вродженого дефекту, відомий як неба розщеплення. ▪ Фарингеальний рафе з'єднується з лівим і правим глотковим констрикторами.
