Retina
Хребетна сітківка - це світлочутливий шар тканини, що закладає внутрішню поверхню ока. Оптика очей створює образ візуального світу на сітківці, що служить значно такою ж функцією, як і фільм у камері. Світло, що вражає сітківку, ініціює каскад хімічних та електричних подій, які в кінцевому підсумку викликають нервові імпульси. Вони направляються в різні візуальні центри головного мозку через волокна зорового нерва. При утворенні ембріонального розвитку хребетних сітківки і зоровий нерв виникають як вирости мозку, що розвивається, тому сітківка вважається частиною центральної нервової системи і насправді є тканиною мозку. Це єдина частина ЦНС, яку можна візуалізувати неінвазивно. Сітківка являє собою шарувату структуру з декількома шарами нейронів, з'єднаних між собою синапсами. Єдиними нейронами, які безпосередньо чутливі до світла, є клітини фоторецепторів. Це, в основному, двох типів: стрижні та конуси. Стовбури працюють переважно у тусклому світлі та забезпечують чорно-біле бачення, а конуси підтримують денне бачення та сприйняття кольору.
