Сцинтиллометр - це науковий пристрій, що використовується для вимірювання невеликих коливань показника заломлення повітря, викликаного змінами температури, вологості та тиску. Він складається з оптичного або радіохвильового передавача та приймача на обох кінцях шляху розповсюдження атмосфери. Приймач виявляє та оцінює коливання інтенсивності переданого сигналу, що називається сцинтиляцією. Величина флуктуацій показника заломлення зазвичай вимірюється через Cn ^ 2, константи структури коливань коефіцієнта заломлення, що є спектральною амплітудою коливань коефіцієнта заломлення в інерціальній піддіапазоні турбулентності.
