Слово "спастичний" використовується по-різному в залежності від географічного розташування його використання та версії англійської мови, що використовується там, що призвело до певної суперечки та непорозумінь щодо природи та доречності слова. Похідне по латині від грецького спастіку, слово в його корені все ще відноситься до зміни тонусу м'язів, що страждає від спастичності медичного стану, що видно при спастичній диплегії та багатьох інших формах церебрального паралічу, а також у термінах типу "спастична ободова кишка" ". У цьому застосуванні, яке досі є основним середовищем слова, слово spastic не має жодних негативних конотацій, оскільки воно точно описує стан.
