Підсумовування - це операція додавання послідовності чисел; результат - їх сума або сума. Якщо числа додаються послідовно зліва направо, будь-який проміжний результат - це часткова сума, сума префіксу або загальна сума підсумовування. Числа, що підлягають підсумовуванню (називаються додаваннями, а іноді і суматозами), можуть бути цілими числами, раціональними числами, дійсними чи комплексними числами. Крім номерів, можна також додати інші типи значень: вектори, матриці, поліноми та, взагалі, елементи будь-якої аддитивної групи (або навіть моноїда). Підсумовування нескінченної послідовності значень називається серією. Значення такої серії часто можна визначити за допомогою ліміту (хоча іноді значення може бути нескінченним, і часто взагалі не має результатів). Інше поняття, пов'язане з обмеженнями кінцевих сум, - інтеграція. Сума термінів має особливе значення, пов'язане з екстраполяцією в контексті розбіжних серій. Підсумовування послідовності являє собою вираз, значення якого є сумою кожного з учасників послідовності.
