У геології суперконтинент являє собою збірку більшості або всього континентальних блоків або кратонів Землі, щоб утворити єдину велику масиву суші. Однак визначення суперконтиненту може бути неоднозначним. Багато тектоністів, таких як Гофман, використовують термін "суперконтинент", що означає "кластеризацію майже всіх континентів". Це визначення залишає можливості для інтерпретації при маркуванні континентального тіла і легше застосовувати до докембрійських часів. Використовуючи тут перше визначення, Гондвана не вважається суперконтинентом, тому що маси Балтики, Лаврентії та Сибіру теж існували одночасно, але фізично відокремлені один від одного.
