Залишки, які також називають міськими відвалами, кульмінальними відвалами, слідами, хвостами, відходами, залишками вилуговування або залишками, є матеріалами, залишеними після процесу розділення цінних фракцій з неекономічної фракції руди. Фундації відрізняються від перевантаження, тобто порожнистих порід або матеріалів, що перекривають руду або мінеральне тіло, які витісняються під час видобутку без обробки. Шахтні хвости зазвичай виготовляються з млини у формі суспензії. У деяких ситуаціях хвости представляють собою зовнішні витрати на видобуток. Це особливо стосується ранніх видобувних робіт, які не вживали належних заходів для створення екологічно чистої сміття після закриття.
