У геометрії дотична лінія (або просто дотична) до кривої площини в заданій точці є пряма, яка "просто торкається" кривої в цій точці. Неформально це лінія через пару нескінченно близьких точок на кривій. Точніше, пряма лінія називається тангенсом кривої y = f (x) у точці x = c на кривій, якщо лінія проходить через точку (c, f (c)) на кривій і має нахил f '(c) де f' - похідна від f. Подібне визначення стосується просторових кривих і кривих в n-мірному евклідовому просторі. Коли вона проходить через точку, в якій дотична лінія та крива зустрічаються, називаються точкою дотику, то лінія дотику "йде в тому ж напрямку", що і крива, і, отже, є найкращим прямолінійним наближенням до кривої при цьому точка Аналогічним чином, дотичній площині до поверхні в даній точці є площина, яка "просто торкається" поверхні в цій точці.
