Тиол
У органічній хімії тиол є сірководневим сполукою, що містить вуглецеву сульфгідрильну групу. Тіоли є сірчим аналогом спиртів, а слово - портманто "тоона" + "алкоголь", перше слово, що походить від грецького θεῖον = "сірка". Сама функціональна група -SH називається або тиоловою групою, або сульфгідрильною групою. Багато тиолів мають сильні запахи, схожі на часник. Тіоли використовуються як одоранти, які допомагають у виявленні природного газу, а "запах природного газу" - через запах тіолу, який використовується як одорант. Тіоли часто називають меркаптанами. Термін merkaptan / mərkæptæn / походить від латинських каптанів mercurium, оскільки тіолатна група настільки міцно з'єднується із сполуками ртуті. Тіоли реагують із ртуттю, утворюючи меркаптиди.
