Гормон щитовидної залози
Гормони щитовидної залози, трийодтиронін та його прогормон, тироксин, є тирозиновими гормонами, що виробляються щитовидною залозою, які перш за все відповідають за регуляцію метаболізму. Йод необхідний для виробництва Т3 і Т4. Дефіцит йоду призводить до зниження виробництва Т3 і Т4, збільшує тканину щитовидної залози і викликає захворювання, відоме як зоб. Основною формою гормону щитовидної залози в крові є тироксин, який має більш тривалий період напіврозпаду, ніж Т3. Відношення Т4 до Т3, що виділяється в кров, становить приблизно 20-1. Т4 перетворюється в активний Т3 в клітинах діодіназами. Вони додатково обробляють декарбоксилюванням та діодінтування для одержання йодотиранаміну і тиронаміну. Всі три ізоформи діодіназ є селенумістичними ферментами, тому дієтичний селен необхідний для виробництва Т3.
