Ураніан - це термін 19-го століття, який спочатку відносився до особи третьої статі, хтось з "жіночою психікою в чоловічому тілі", який сексуально залучався до чоловіків, а потім поширився на охоплення гомосексуальних гендерних варіантів жінок, а також число інших сексуальних типів. Вважається, що це англійська адаптація німецького слова Urning, яку вперше опублікував активіст Карл Генріх Ульрікс у серії з п'яти буклетів, які були зібрані під назвою Forschungen über das Räthsel der mannmännlichen Liebe. Ульріх розробив свою термінологію перед першим публічним використанням терміна "гомосексуал", який з'явився в 1869 році в брошурі, анонімно опублікованій Карл-Марією Кертбени.
