Ванкоміцин INN / væŋkkommaɪsɨn / є антибіотиком, корисним для лікування ряду бактеріальних інфекцій. Це клас антибіотиків гликопептиду і ефективний переважно проти грампозитивних бактерій. Вначалі ванкоміцин був виведений в 1953 році на Елі Ліллі з зразка ґрунту, зібраного з внутрішніх джунглів Борнео місіонером. Це природний антибіотик, який утворюється грунтовими бактеріями Actinobacteria видів Amycolatopsis orientalis. Це складне хімічне з'єднання та приклад порівняно рідкої галогенорганічної натуральної сполуки, що містить два ковалентно зв'язаних атома хлору. Це сполука виробляється в промисловості шляхом ферментації і дається загальна назва ванкоміцин, отримана з терміну "перемогти". Початкове вказівку на ванкоміцин було призначено для лікування стійкого до пеніциліну Staphylococcus aureus, використання якого протягом багатьох років залишається живим через те, що сполуку потрібно вводити внутрішньовенно, і таким чином забезпечується менша кількість бактерій можливостей для розвитку стійкості, а також те, що організми були відносно повільно розвиватися / адаптуватися до нього, навіть в експериментах.
