Оксамистий калібр, також називається оксамитовою качкою або відбілюванням, є великою морською качкою, яка поширюється на дальній півночі Європи та Азії на захід від Єнізького басейну. Невелика, ізольована населення гніздиться у східній Туреччині. Східно-сибірські та північноамериканські білокритяні черепки іноді вважаються консервативними з оксамитовим шкури, а два її складових підвиди називають тоді М. f. Стейнегері та М. Ф. deglandi Бархати і білокристалійні каракулі, разом із прибиральником, розміщуються в підроді Меланітта, що відрізняється від підроди оідемії, чорних і звичайних скоттерів. Він зимує далі на південь у помірних зонах, у Європі як на південь, як у Великобританії, так і на Чорному та Каспійському морях. Невеликі номери досягають Франції та півночі Іспанії. Він утворює великі зграї на придатних прибережних водах. Вони щільно упаковані, і птахи, як правило, знімаються разом. Покритий гніздо побудований на землі поряд з морем, озерами або річками, у лісах або тундрі, і зазвичай містить 7-9 яєць. Ця качка занурюється у ракоподібних і молюсків. Він характеризується величезною формою та великим рахунком. Це найбільший калібр на 51-58 см.
