В'язкість
В'язкість рідини є мірою її стійкості до поступової деформації за рахунок зсуву напруги або розтягу. Для рідин це відповідає неофіційному поняттю "товщина". Наприклад, мед має набагато вищу в'язкість, ніж вода. В'язкість обумовлена тріском між сусідніми частинками в рідині, що рухаються з різними швидкостями. Коли рідина витікає через трубку, рідина зазвичай рухається швидше біля осі і дуже повільно біля стін; отже, для усунення тертя між шарами потрібен певний стрес і рух рідини. Для того самого шару швидкості потрібний напруга пропорційний в'язкості рідини. В'язкість рідини залежить від розміру та форми його частинок та відмінностей між частинками. Рідина, яка не має стійкості до напруги зсуву, відома як ідеальна рідина або інвалідна рідина. Нульова в'язкість спостерігається лише за дуже низьких температур у надплідниках. Інакше всі рідини мають позитивну в'язкість. Якщо в'язкість дуже висока, наприклад, в шахті, рідина виявиться твердою в короткі терміни.
