Вокодер - це система аналізу / синтезу, яка використовується для відтворення людської мови. У датчику вхідний сигнал пропускається через багатодіапазонний фільтр, кожна смуга пропускається через послідовника конверта, а сигнали керування від підписів конверта передаються декодеру. Декодер застосовує ці керуючі сигнали до відповідних фільтрів у синтезаторе. Оскільки сигнали керування змінюються лише повільно в порівнянні з вихідним сигналом мови, пропускна спроможність, необхідна для передачі мови, може бути зменшена. Це дозволяє більше мовних каналів розподіляти радіотрансляцію або підводний кабель. Зашифруючи керуючі сигнали, передача голосу може бути захищена від перехоплення. Вокодер був спочатку розроблений як кодера мовлення для телекомунікаційних додатків у 1930-х роках, ідея полягає в тому, щоб кодувати мову для передачі. Передача параметрів мовної моделі замість оцифрованого представлення сигналу мови зберігає пропускну здатність каналу зв'язку; параметри моделі змінюються відносно повільно, в порівнянні з тими змінами, які вони описують.
