Хвильова функція або хвильова функція в квантовій механіці описує квантовий стан системи однієї або декількох частинок і містить всю інформацію про систему. Величини, пов'язані з вимірами, як середній імпульс частки, виведені з хвильової функції. Отже, це центральна кількість у квантовій механіці. Найбільш поширеними символами для хвильової функції є грецькі букви ψ або Ψ. Рівняння Шредінгера визначає, як хвильова функція еволюціонує з часом, тобто хвильова функція є рішенням рівняння Шредінгера. Хвильова функція поводиться якісно, як і інші хвилі, наприклад, водяні хвилі або хвилі на струнах, тому що рівняння Шредінгера математично є типом хвильового рівняння. Це пояснює назву "хвильова функція", і породжує хвилеподібну подвійність. Хвильова функція для даної системи не має унікального подання. Найчастіше він приймається як функція всіх координат положення частинок і часу, тобто хвильова функція знаходиться в "просторі позиції".
