У фізиці твердого тіла функція роботи є мінімальною термодинамічною роботою, необхідною для видалення електрона з твердої речовини до точки в вакуумі безпосередньо поза твердою поверхнею. Тут "негайно" означає, що остаточне розташування електрона знаходиться далеко від поверхні в атомному масштабі, але все ще занадто близько до твердої речовини, що під впливом навколишніх електричних полів у вакуумі.
