Reducerea *aduia › adia pare dificilă (motiv pentru care Rosetti, I, 159 respinge acest etimon); însă cf.baiur › baier. Pentru sensul 3, cf.fr.flatter, din lat.flare. Etimonul *adūliāre a mai fost propus (DAR; REW 204 a), dar considerat ca der.vulg. de la adūlāre „a adula”, ceea ce presupune că sensul 3 este cel primitiv (cf. împotriva acestei păreri Graur, BL, V, 86). Este puțin probabilă ipoteza lui Candrea, Conv. lit., XXXIX, 119 (cf.
