Кардіостимулятор - це медичний пристрій, який випромінює електричні імпульси, передані через електроди, які контактують з серцевими м'ятами, щоб регулювати серцебиття. Мініатюрований електронний пристрій випромінює регулярне порушення ритму серця з фізіологічними центрами, які не можуть забезпечити нормальний серцевий ритм. Одна з найпоширеніших умов, що призводить до необхідності використання кардіостимулятора, називається брахикардія, тобто частота серцевих скорочень занадто низька для задоволення потреб організму. Перші кардіостимулятори з'явилися і були імплантовані в 1958 році компанією Siemens-Elema у Швеції.
