Il won è la valuta ufficiale dei due stati integranti della penisola coreana: Corea del Nord e Corea del Sud. Il carattere cinese e l'etimologia danno il significato di tondo o cerchio alla parola won, stessa definizione e etimo che per lo yen o lo yuan. Il simbolo del won, si rappresenta in Unicode come: 20A9. Storicamente, il won coreano era suddiviso in 100 jeon, però attualmente nella Corea del Sud la moneta frazionata non s'usa più. La quantità più piccola in uso è di 10 won, approssimativamente 0,8 centesimi di euro. Dato curioso, vista la forte svalutazione del cambio degli ultimi anni, i tagli della carta moneta dello Won Sud Coreano sono di 1.000 Won, 5.000 Won, e massimo 10.000 Won che al cambio del primo quadrimestre 2009 rappresenta poco più di 5 euro. Sono allo studio banconote da 50.000 e 100.000 ma nulla di definitivo per ora, per cui la economia locale è soprattutto basata sull'emissione di assegni bancari, vista la totale mancanza di praticità delle banconote in questione. Il won coreano è stato usato come moneta per la prima volta in Corea tra il 1902 e il 1910, quando la Corea era ancora un paese unito.
