길이 6~20µm의 가는 나선상의 호기성균. 배양이 가능하며, 바일씨병, 칠일열, 추열(秋熱), 토좌열(土佐熱) 등의 지방병(地方病)이나 서교증(鼠咬症)을 일으키는 병원체. 통상 본균에 의한 질환은 쥐에 의해 매개된다.
