当通过诸如去极化电池电极的方法观察电池内部和外部之间的电位差时，与外部相比，未被激发的膜的内部电负电。 换句话说，细胞膜在其外侧被电极化。 该电位差被称为静态电位或膜电位（膜电位）。 所以，当电流向外流过（穿过细胞膜）时，静电势的幅度减小。 静止电位的降低是膜中电位差的减小，这是膜极化消失的过程，并且这种现象被称为去极化。 通常，去极化的原因称为去极化，动作电位是广义上的去极化。 탈분극 세포내 전극 등의 방법으로 세포내외의 전위차(電位差)를 보면, 흥분하고 있지 않은 막(膜)의 내측은 외측에 비하여 전기적으로 부(負)이다. 즉 세포막은 외측이 전기적으로 정(正)으로 분극하고 있다. 이 전위차를 정지전위 또는 막전위(膜電位)라고 한다. 그래서 세포막을 가로질러 전류를 외향(外向)으로 흘리면 정지전위의 크기는 감소한다. 정지전위의 감소는 막에 있는 전위차의 감소로서, 막의 분극이 소실하여 가는 과정임으로, 이 현상을 탈분극(脫分極)이라고 한다. 일반적으로는 어떠한 원인이건, 정지전위가 감소하는 것을 탈분극이라고 하며, 활동전위도 넓은 의미의 탈분극이다.
