একটি পোপ সম্মেলন হল রোমের একটি নতুন বিশপ নির্বাচন করার আহ্বান জানিয়ে কার্ডিনস কলেজের একটি সভা, এটি পোপ নামেও পরিচিত। পোপ রোমান ক্যাথলিকদের দ্বারা সেন্ট পিটার এবং রোমান ক্যাথলিক চার্চের পার্শ্ববর্তী মাথার প্রেরিত অভিষিক্ত হওয়ার কথা বলে মনে করা হয়। গির্জাটি অস্তিত্বের অর্ধেকেরও বেশি সময়ের জন্য পোপ নির্বাচন করার পদ্ধতি এবং একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের নেতা নির্বাচন করার সবচেয়ে প্রাচীনতম পদ্ধতি। পোপ নির্বাচনের রাজনৈতিক হস্তক্ষেপের ইতিহাস এবং 1২68-1271 এর মধ্যবর্তী সময়ে পপের মধ্যে দীর্ঘমেয়াদি অবসান, 1২74 খ্রিস্টাব্দে লিওনের দ্বিতীয় কাউন্সিলের সময় পোপ গ্রেগরি এক্সকে ডিক্রি দেওয়ার জন্য প্রধান ভোটারদের একত্রীকরণ তথা ক্লেভের মধ্যে লক করা উচিত এবং রোমের একটি নতুন বিশপ নির্বাচন না হওয়া পর্যন্ত ছাড়ার অনুমতি নেই। কনক্লেভগুলি এখন অ্যাপোস্টিক্যাল প্যালেসের সিস্টাইন চ্যাপেলে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। Apostolic বয়স থেকে, রোমের বিশপ, অন্যান্য ধর্মপালের মত, বাইকোজির পাদরীবর্গ ও সাধারণ মানুষের ঐক্যমত্য দ্বারা নির্বাচিত হয়েছিল। 1059 খ্রিস্টাব্দে, কার্টিন্স কলেজের একমাত্র নিরীক্ষক নির্বাচিত হন।

অভিধানে কনক্লেভের প্রথম সংজ্ঞা হল গোপনীয় বা গোপন মিটিং। কনক্লেভ এর অন্যান্য সংজ্ঞা বন্ধ অ্যাপার্টমেন্ট যেখানে কার্ডিনিয়ান কলেজ একটি নতুন পোপ নির্বাচন করে। কনক্লেভ এই উদ্দেশ্য জন্য কার্ডিনাল কলেজের একটি সভা হয়।
