Agnostizismus
Agnostizismus ist die Ansicht, daß die Wahrheitswerte bestimmter Ansprüche - insbesondere Ansprüche über die Existenz oder Nicht-Existenz irgendeiner Gottheit - sowie anderer religiöser und metaphysischer Behauptungen unbekannt oder unerkennbar sind. Nach dem Philosophen William L. Rowe, im populären Sinne, ist ein Agnostiker jemand, der weder glaubt noch ungläubig ist in der Existenz einer Gottheit oder Gottheiten, während ein Theist und ein Atheist glauben und ungläubig sind. Thomas Henry Huxley, ein englischer Biologe, prägte das Wort Agnostiker im Jahre 1869. Allerdings haben frühere Denker Werke geschrieben, die agnostische Gesichtspunkte förderten. Zu diesen Denkern gehören Sanjaya Belatthaputta, ein indischer Philosoph des 5. Jhs. BCE, der Agnostizismus über jedes Leben nachträglich aussprach, Protagoras, ein griechischer Philosoph des 5. Jhs. BCE, war für die Götter agnostisch. Die Nasadiya Sukta im Rigveda ist agnostisch über den Ursprung des Universums. Seit der Zeit, in der Huxley den Begriff prägte, haben viele andere Denker ausführlich über Agnostizismus geschrieben.
