Der musikalische Begriff alto, der in italienisch "hoch" bedeutet, bezieht sich auf den zweithöchsten Teil einer kontrapunktischen musikalischen Textur und wird auch auf die zugehörige Stimmlage angewandt, vor allem in der Chormusik. Noch selten beschreibt es den höchsten männlichen Solo-Voice-Typ, und es ist auch das Wurzelwort von contralto, der niedrigste Standard-weiblichen Voice-Typ. Bei der Benennung von Instrumenten kann sich "alto" ebenfalls auf den entsprechenden Stimmumfang oder auf die musikalische Rolle beziehen.

I remember once, when I started writing for the alto saxophone, a saxophonist told me to think of it as being like a cross between an oboe and a viola, but louder.
Adele Adkins' retro-soul debut, '19', was striking less for her songs than for that voice: a voluptuous, slightly parched alto that swooped and fluttered like a Dusty Springfield student trying to upstage her teacher, or at least update the rules.
The baritone can serve functions that the alto and tenor cannot, in orchestral voicing.
