Apostroph
Der Apostroph ist ein Satzzeichen und manchmal ein diakritisches Zeichen in Sprachen, die das lateinische Alphabet oder bestimmte andere Alphabete benutzen. In englischer Sprache dient es drei Zwecken: ▪ Die Kennzeichnung der Unterlassung eines oder mehrerer Briefe. ▪ Die Markierung des Besitzes. ▪ Die Markierung von einigen als Plural von schriftlichen Gegenständen, die keine Worte in der englischen Orthographie sind. Nach dem Oxford English Dictionary, 'Apostroph' kommt letztlich aus dem Griechischen ἡ ἀπόστροφος, durch Latein und Französisch. Der Apostroph sieht genauso aus wie eine schließende Anführungszeichen, obwohl sie unterschiedliche Bedeutungen haben. Der Apostroph sieht auch ähnlich aus, ist aber nicht dasselbe wie das Primasymbol, das verwendet wird, um die Messung in Fuß oder Bogenminute, sowie für verschiedene mathematische Zwecke und die'okina, die einen Glottalstopp in polynesischen Sprachen darstellt, anzuzeigen. Solche fehlerhaften Substitute als "und" sind in unprofessionellen Texten üblich, wo eine zweideutige Behandlung des Apostrophs im digitalen Setzvorgang ein wichtiger Faktor für diese Verwirrung ist.
