Der kritische Apparat ist das kritische und primäre Quellenmaterial, das eine Textausgabe begleitet. Ein kritischer Apparat ist oft ein Nebenprodukt der Textkritik. Viele Editionen verwenden ein Standardformat für einen kritischen Apparat, wie durch eine Linie von Hamlet dargestellt, die die Oxford Complete Works wie folgt druckt: LAERTES. Das Format des Gerätes hat mehrere Teile: ▪ Der Ort der Variante im Text ▪ Das Lemma, das ist der Teil des Textes, auf den die Note anwendbar ist ▪ Eine richtige Klammer ▪ Die Quelle, aus der die Auflage stammt ▪ A Liste der Varianten, jeweils gefolgt von der Quelle, in der die Variante gefunden wird, und mit einem Semikolon abgesetzt. Um Platz zu sparen, werden häufig zitierte Quellen in der Regel eine Abkürzung namens siglum zugewiesen.
