Archeopteryx
Archeopteryx, manchmal auch von seinem deutschen Namen Urvogel bezeichnet, ist eine Gattung des frühen Vogels, die Übergang zwischen gefiederten Dinosauriern und modernen Vögeln ist. Der Name leitet sich von der altgriechischen ἀρχαῖος Bedeutung "alt" und πτέρυξ, was bedeutet "Feder" oder "Flügel". Seit dem späten neunzehnten Jahrhundert war es allgemein von Paläontologen akzeptiert worden, und gefeiert in Laienreferenzen, als der älteste bekannte Vogel. Allerdings sind seitdem ältere potenzielle avialans identifiziert worden, darunter Anchiornis, Xiaotingia und Aurornis. Archeopteryx lebte in der späten Jurazeit vor etwa 150 Millionen Jahren, in dem, was jetzt Süddeutschland ist, in einer Zeit, in der Europa ein Archipel von Inseln in einem flachen, warmen tropischen Meer war, viel näher am Äquator, als es jetzt ist. Ähnlich wie bei einer europäischen Elster, mit den größten Individuen, die möglicherweise die Größe eines Raben erreichen, könnte Archeopteryx auf etwa 0,5 m Länge wachsen.
