Argania
Der Argan ist eine Baumart, die dem kalkhaltigen Halbwüsten-Sous-Tal des südwestlichen Marokkos und der algerischen Region Tindouf im westlichen Mittelmeerraum endemisch ist. Es ist die einzige Art in der Gattung Argania. Argan wächst auf 8-10 Meter hoch und lebt bis zu 150-200 Jahre. Sie sind dornig, mit knorrigen Stämmen. Die Blätter sind klein, 2-4 cm lang, oval mit einer abgerundeten Spitze. Die Blumen sind klein, mit fünf blassgelb-grünen Blütenblättern; Blüte ist im April. Die Frucht ist 2-4 cm lang und 1,5-3 cm breit, mit einer dicken, bitteren Schale um eine süß-riechende, aber unangenehm aromatisierte Schicht aus breiigem Perikarp. Das umgibt die sehr harte Nuss, die einen kleinen, ölreichen Samen enthält. Die Frucht nimmt ein Jahr in Anspruch, um zu reifen, reifend im Juni bis Juli des folgenden Jahres.
