Die im Jahre 1588 als Reformbewegung der Augustinerbrüder in Spanien gegründete Recollect-Brüder wurden im Jahre 1612 mit ihrem ersten Vorgänger, Enrique de la Sagrada, autonom. Die Unbeschuhten wurden im Jahre 1592 zu einer eigenständigen religiösen Gemeinde mit ihrem eigenen Prioren und wurden im Jahre 1610 in den Status eines gesonderten Bettelordens erhoben.
