Bazillus
Bacillus ist eine Gattung von Gram-positiven, stabförmigen Bakterien und ein Mitglied der Phylum Firmicutes. Bacillus-Arten können obligate Aerobes oder fakultative Anaerobier sein. Sie werden positiv auf das Enzym Katalase testen, wenn es Sauerstoff verwendet oder vorhanden ist. Ubiquitous in der Natur, Bacillus umfasst sowohl frei lebende und parasitären pathogenen Arten. Unter stressigen Umgebungsbedingungen können die Bakterien ovale Endosporen produzieren, die keine wahren Sporen sind, die aber die Bakterien sich für sehr lange Zeiträume in einen ruhenden Zustand verwandeln können. Diese Eigenschaften definierten ursprünglich die Gattung, aber nicht alle diese Arten sind eng verwandt, und viele sind in andere Gattungen von Firmicutes verlegt worden. Viele Arten von Bacillus können reichlich Mengen an Enzymen produzieren, die in verschiedenen Industrien verwendet werden. Einige Bacillus-Arten können intrazelluläre Einschlüsse von Polyhydroxyalkanoaten unter gewissen widrigen Umgebungsbedingungen bilden, wie bei einem Mangel an Elementen wie Phosphor, Stickstoff oder Sauerstoff, kombiniert mit einer übermäßigen Zufuhr von Kohlenstoffquellen. B.subtilis hat sich als wertvolles Forschungsmodell erwiesen.
