Barbiturat
Barbiturate sind Medikamente, die als zentrales Nervensystem-Erniedriger fungieren und daher ein breites Wirkungsspektrum erzeugen können, von leichter Sedierung bis hin zur totalen Anästhesie. Sie sind auch wirksam als Anxiolytika, Hypnotika und Antikonvulsiva. Barbiturate haben auch analgetische Effekte; Allerdings sind diese Effekte etwas schwach, was verhindert, dass Barbiturate in der Chirurgie in Abwesenheit von anderen Analgetika verwendet werden. Sie haben Suchtpotential, sowohl physisch als auch psychologisch. Barbiturate wurden mittlerweile weitgehend durch Benzodiazepine in der Routinemedizin ersetzt - zum Beispiel bei der Behandlung von Angst und Schlaflosigkeit - vor allem weil Benzodiazepine bei der Überdosierung deutlich weniger gefährlich sind. Allerdings werden Barbiturate noch in der allgemeinen Anästhesie, für Epilepsie, für die Behandlung von akuten Migräne und Cluster-Kopfschmerzen, gelegentlich für die Behandlung von rezidivierenden Migräne und Cluster-Kopfschmerzen und unterstützten Selbstmord verwendet. Barbiturate sind Derivate der Barbitursäure.
